13 killed, 60 injured in Peshawar suicide attack: Terrorists strike ISI

* 10 ISI officials killed, three missing
* Surrounding walls and entire block of agency building completely destroyed
* NWFP IG says 200 kilogrammes of explosives used in attack

By Akhtar Amin

PESHAWAR: At least 13 people – 10 military personnel and three civilians – were killed and 60 injured when a suicide bomber ripped through a military checkpost in front of the regional headquarters of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the provincial capital on Friday, said officials and locals.

An ISPR statement said the bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into a military checkpost on Artillery Road at 6:45am – killing 10 military personnel and three civilians, and injuring 60. According to witnesses and security sources, the bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the ISI building in front of Army Stadium, claiming that the ISI office was the target.

Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) Chief Executive Abdul Hameed Afridi told Daily Times that the hospital had received five bodies, while two of those injured died in hospital. He said 31 injured – including 11 ISI officials – were brought to LRH. He said at least six people – including two ISI officials – were in critical condition.

He said that army had shifted the bodies of its personnel and injured soldiers to Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Official sources said bodies of three ISI officials and 29 injured people were also shifted to CMH from the blast site.

200 kilogrammes: NWFP IG Malik Naveed said the vehicle was loaded with around 200 kilogrammes of explosives. NWFP Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain – after visiting the blast site – told the media that nine ISI officials were killed, while three were missing.

Hussain said that surrounding walls and an entire block of the agency headquarters were completely destroyed, while six blocks had been partially damaged. He said the bomber struck the agency building where a military checkpost had been set up. He said the agency building was also a target of the attack, as it was playing a key role in the ongoing military operations in South Waziristan and other tribal agencies. The president and the prime minister have condemned the attack.
